Phendimetrazine tartrate, as the dextro isomer, has the chemical name of (+)-3,4-Dimethyl-2-phenylmorpholine Tartrate. The structural formula is as follows:

Phendimetrazine tartrate is a white, odorless powder which is bitter in taste. It is soluble in water, ethanol, and methanol.

Phendimetrazine tartrate is a sympathomimetic amine with pharmacological activity similar amphetamines, the prototype drugs of this class used in obesity. Tachyphylaxis and tolerance have been demonstrated with all drugs of this class in which these phenomena have been looked for.

Drugs of this type which are used to cure obesity are commonly known as "anorexigenics” or “anorectics". It has not been established whether the action of such drugs in the treatment of obesity is strictly limited to appetite suppression.
